This packing guide for Tuscany offers a comprehensive guide on what to wear for various events, including wine tasting, dinners out, poolside, and more. The guide highlights the best season to visit, offers tips on what to wear, and provides a list of outfits that can be worn in different weather conditions. For fall, Tuscany offers brisk days of olive oil tasting and countryside strolls, while summer brings a mix of dresses, skirts, leggings, cropped pants, jumpsuits, rompers, shorts, linen shirts, slacks, a light jacket, thick wool trousers paired with chunky sweaters or flannel shirts with a sweater, pleather leggings, skinny jeans, t-shirts, button-down blouses, light sweaters, tank tops, motorcycle boots, and more.
To avoid casual items, opt for polished bottoms like wide-leg trousers. A single suitcase and small backpack are all you need, with a jumbo suitcase for months or a medium/carry-on for longer stays. Some travel outfits from Tuscany include scarf jackets, sweaters, jeans, bag boots, and sundresses. When August hits, enjoy the Tuscan Riviera with sundresses, hats, sandals, and swimwear. Enjoy Florence early mornings and nights while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
📹 what to wear in italy | 3 weeks – carry-on only | summer travel capsule
Ciao everyone! Today I’m sharing my Italy travel capsule for what to wear on vacation in Italy for 3 weeks with a carry-on only.
What colors go with Tuscany?
The Tuscan color palette comprises four basic colors: ocher/reds, oranges, greens, and blues. These colors are derived from clay and can be used to create a Tuscan-inspired kitchen or living room. The HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams line offers a down-to-earth palette inspired by Italian stucco and other elements. The dining room features the ocher of Brandywine on the walls, while the kitchen features the creamy yellow of White Raison.
The living room features Cascade Green, with Creamy on the trim, creating a warm, rustic palette suitable for various architectural styles in the country, desert, or by the sea. Understanding the colors and textures is crucial before making final decisions on your paint and décor palette.
What not to wear in Italy as a tourist?
To blend in with Italians, dress appropriately, avoid bright colors, and wear comfortable shoes for exploration. Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting churches or religious sites, as they may be restricted. Respect historical sites like the Colosseum and avoid carving initials or engaging in vandalism. Show respect for these treasures and earn the respect of locals. Disconnect and immerse yourself in the beauty of Italy by putting your phone away and fully engaging with your surroundings. This not only helps you blend in but also enriches your travel experience. Remember to respect the locals and avoid carving your initials or engaging in vandalism.
Can you wear leggings in Florence, Italy?
While leggings may be worn to the Duomo, as they cover the entire leg, it is advisable to avoid overly clingy clothing as a sign of respect for the sacred environment in Italy.
Can you wear sneakers to dinner in Italy?
In Italy, it is common to wear sneakers in restaurants, but it is not appropriate in fancy establishments. It is recommended to bring a nice pair of shoes to maintain classiness. Italian restaurant rules dictate not to make staff shout, such as ordering salad before the main course, eating a five-course meal, and having specific wine pairings. However, today’s generation is more accepting of these rules and does not care about old rules. They do not mind ordering red wine for a fish plate or other dishes. Therefore, it is essential to dress appropriately and maintain a classy appearance in Italian restaurants.
Does it get cold at night in Tuscany?
Winter in Tuscany and Umbria is characterized by sunny days and mild nights, with temperatures ranging from 45°F (7°C) along the coast to 38 to 42°F (3. 5°C to 5. 5°C) inland. The coolest months are January and February, with January being slightly cooler. The mountains are below freezing, with snowfall attracting skiers. November is the most precipitation-prone month. The tourism season spans from April to September, with July and August being peak months.
The best time to visit is in the quieter months, from April to June and September to October, when weather is generally good, prices are lower, and there are fewer tourists crowding main attractions. This results in shorter lines at museums, less crowds inside museums, and shorter wait times at popular restaurants.
Do tourists wear jeans in Italy?
Italians still consider shorts as “resort wear”, but they are popular in the streets. Cotton or capri pants are suitable for women, while jeans are accepted. Colored pants, such as chinos and jeans, are fashionable for both sexes, and men often wear red pants. These suggestions can help travelers plan their trip to Italy, and if you have any other suggestions, feel free to share them. For more travel books, visit Top Travel Books.
Can you wear jeans in Florence, Italy?
Restaurants in Italy do not have a dress code, but it is important to dress well to blend in with the locals and avoid getting funny looks if you show up in sweats. Dark jeans or slacks are acceptable, and women often wear dresses as it gets warmer. Aperitivo, a small snack and drink before a meal, is a popular activity in Italy, similar to an American happy hour. It is a great way to spend time with friends and get your appetite ready for dinner.
While there are many trendy spots catering to Americans, local restaurants often have the best food. To determine if a restaurant is local, dine in locations where Italians live, ask an Italian, or observe the attire of the people in the restaurant. Sometimes, there may be a language barrier, but that’s part of the fun of immersing yourself in new languages.
Is there a dress code in Tuscany?
Tuscany is a stylish destination where locals prefer casual attire, with no cultural or religious restrictions. The region is primarily rural, with small medieval villages and quaint streets. During summer, comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended for various activities, including truffle hunting, winery visits, and walks in nature. High heels and cosmopolitan urban outfits are most suitable for Florence, while casual chic is best elsewhere. Tuscany is primarily known for its rural lifestyle, with small medieval villages and quaint paths.
Should I wear jeans in Italy in summer?
Italians still consider shorts as “resort wear”, but they are popular in the streets. Cotton or capri pants are suitable for women, while jeans are accepted. Colored pants, such as chinos and jeans, are fashionable for both sexes, and men often wear red pants. What to wear in Tuscany, Italy in July?
For a summer Tuscany holiday, pack a hat, sunglasses, rompers, lightweight pants, mix and max separates, bright sundresses, durable sandals, and comfortable shoes. Italian finesse is a distinguishing feature, with two types of clothing: country clothes and town pieces. In the wine country and countryside, people wear functional and practical clothes, as they work outdoors for long hours. However, you won’t find sweatpants or distressed denim in vineyards, as they maintain an exemplary sense of style and ensure their clothes are well coordinated. A comfortable pair of shoes with secure straps around the ankles is recommended for sightseeing explorations.
Should I bring jeans to Italy?
Italians still consider shorts as “resort wear”, but they are popular in the streets. Cotton or capri pants are suitable for women, while jeans are accepted. 📹 How to pack using ONE Carry On for ONE WEEK of outfits! *Genius Packing Method Revealed*
Hi Everyone I hate to boast, but I’m a packing genius;) In this video I’m showing you my secret pro tip for packing up to 14 outfits in …
Alyssa, I love how dedicated you are to slow consumption. You always look so stylish and put together even with just a few items. I have been perusal your website for over a year now and you are the real deal!! You wear the same pieces now that you wore back then. I am trying to lessen my purchasing and live more with this mentality. It’s better for the earth and my wallet. In a world of instant gratification and comparisons I have mad respect for your discipline to this way of life. ❤
Very inspiring! By the way, the poppies from your scarf and your red shirt match so well! Have your ever worn them together? With your tan shorts and basket tote, that would make a nice combination for a colorful look. Either scarf top with open shirt or wearing the shirt and the scarf on your head or tied as a belt.
I often put a large wallet bag in my large tote when I travel to use as a smaller bag when needed. I have a Hobo brand one that works great👍😁 Safe and Happy travels! Oh a large wrap is always good that you can wear as a rap in the evening or on the plane and as a swimsuit cover up ! Love multi use❤️
Hi Alyssa, I found your website two years ago when my husband and I were preparing for our 3 week trip to Northern Italy. I wish i had had this article then as I over packed abyssmally. I really loved the Italian style articles you put out then. This year my husband and I are traveling to Copenhagen and Malmo. Totally different weather this time than the 100+ weather we had two years ago. We are both committed to taking only carry ons this time. Have a fabulous trip.
Hahaha, I had anxiety perusal you pick and cull from your packing choices, Alyssa. I am a chronic over packer! But in truth, I have no issue doing some washing while holidaying. I tend to add a few pieces, just in case, that do not even end up seeing the light of day! Have a wonderful time away. Stay safe and well ❤
In about a week I’m going to France, Spain and Portugal for about 5 weeks! I’ve been planning what to take for months and I keep changing my mind. I’m not a very casual person and I usually wear a slot of white, so trying to figure out what that means clothes washing wise. I feel like I should wear colour that doesn’t show marks, but then I won’t be dressed as myself. You’ve reminded me that I have a nice tshirt dress too, so I need to find it! 3 swimsuits is ok, on Trinny London, she was taking 6 bikinis for 6 days. 😂 Have fun on your trip!
Have to vote for the 54321 method. And I picked up travel cubes for the time last week for my travel (landed yesterday) and the cubes are AWESOME. Never going back. I fit everything for a month. Three countries. And a wedding. Into an old school roller. The big trick: wearing ballet metallic flats for the wedding. Not heels.
I recently traveled to Spain for 4 days in Madrid with friends at fancy restaurants, several days of hiking up north and a week horseback riding from one place to the next. I managed to pack 4 different outfits for Madrid, several days hiking and all my riding gear in a carry-on. Quite proud of myself. Riding boots and chaps and pants and shirts take up a lot of space and at night it was cool in the mountains so I had also packed some warm clothing. Of course, I wore everything I packed. Even had room to bring back a heavy winter scarf I fell in love with! Luv what you do!
I’m very curious about the linen shirts…don’t they look a mess with wrinkles galore? I bought a short-sleeved one from JCrew, but regret that I didn’t think about the cuffed sleeve–what a nightmare to iron after washing! Maybe it doesn’t matter so much with the long sleeves. I would feel the need to pack a steamer. Loved your capsule! Have a wonderful trip!
hope you are having a great time! Your packing articles are always so helpful to me. I used your previous tip on a trip to Peru in April and was thaknful to be travelling light. I’m going to Australia with my family for the month of August and I have a feeling packing light may not be achieved 😛 I find it’s easier when it’s just me or just me and my husband but adding my daughter to the mix, I just give up and pack check-in luggage 😀
Last June I traveled to London for 2-weeks with just carry on. I made a couple of mistakes. I packed too many outerwear items, as I thought that I would be cold at night (part of our accommodation in London was a small yacht at St Katherine Docks). I never wore the heavy sweater I brought. I wished that I had a second pair of shorts with me. I checked the weather in advance, but found the June weather in London to be more humid than summer weather in California.
I’m on my way to Mallorca next week so these tips will come in handy! Also, I have to tell you that after my trip to Brygge Guldsmeden in Copenhagen (on your recommendation) a few weeks ago, my daughter is now staying there and loves it! Have a wonderful time in Sardinia. I was there last summer and it was lovely! Safe travels. xo
Sardegna is super relaxed, and super hot this year, with the heatwave!! It’s all about the beautiful beaches and a cooler breeze in the evenings as its an island. You don’t have many vests or day shorts. You would probably wear both trousers and the dresses and the lighter cover ups are perfect. Maybe you can wash garments whilst your there anyway. But you’ll have a great time whatever you take… Buona vacanza!
Ciao Alyssa, io vivo in Sardegna. Buon viaggio!
Thank you so much Alyssa, I can always count on you!!!!! My husband and I are leaving for Florence, Italy Sptember 1st for four nights then head to Lake Como for a land and river cruise up the Rhine River. I am determined to only bring a carry on. I’m getting better at it, but you made it easier for me to decide what to pack!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Ciao! xxx
Would red sole Louboutin boots be considered tacky or flashy in southern Italy? I don’t wear obvious labels or logos and my style is very simple, but they are the most comfortable boots I own and have a block heel good for walking on cobblestones. I really want to wear them traveling around Italy this fall.
Great article! Allow me to pick your brain… I am considering taking a one month getaway this winter to escape the Oklahoma weather . Rather than staying in a large city or a primarily tourist town, I would like to live in REAL Italy. Perhaps on with more bang for you buck?? Any location suggestions? I know language is an issue. Help!
Honestly I was so sorry to see your pants eliminated 😅 didn’t you consider wearing them on the plane? I love the print on those and to me it’s an instant upgrade for any outfit (I am not a print girl and usually don’t wear printed tops or anything printed near my face, so a bottom with some peculiar design instantly makes any outfit more interesting))) Anyway, thanks for a helpful packing guide! Would be interesting to see your lookbook from the trip to compare expectation (this article) Vs reality of what you’ll actually have worn most 😊 Have a nice trip!🎉
Best packing vlogs EVER!! Cant wait to use these formulas. I continually overpack then get to my destination with “nothing to wear”. Last year after travelling 6 hours from my home ro housesit discovered in my determination to not bring too many clothes completely forgot to add tops to my case. Had only one tee shirt for 3 weeks so had to go shopping. No idea how I did that 😫
I really don’t like those tailored shorts, there’s a reason why you never see younger women wearing them, they scream middle-aged to me and not in a good way. I like the denim ones, thought they’re way too faded imo. I am Italian, I’ve never seen button-down shirts worn as beach cover-ups or as summer clothes, the ironing alone would put any beach-goer off. Just wear the (linen) dresses, light cotton jeans/denim skirts, cute t-shirts/blouses
You’re right – you’re a packing genius! I’ve watched 40+ packing hack articles but your visuals brought it down to the 1st grade level for me and that’s what I needed all along. I printed the packing list, used what I had to follow the plan – then bought the rest (thank you SHEIN & Amazon). Now all I need to do is book a doggone trip. Thank you so very much!
I pack in a similar way but it does get boring using the same colour palette after a while. Also wear the bottoms for night time first when they are fresh and carry them over to the next day, rather than wearing all day. It feels dresser that way. Couldn’t imagine going out for the evening in something I’d already worn all day.
What a fabulous looking lady & her packing regime is ace!! She’s sooo very stylish & gorgeous looking and is soo practical & has it off to a tee! Great article with loads of great ideas & loved that she showed each of the outfits! 👏👍🙏🏻 (I wud love to see really that they all fitted into the one carry on bag though?)
This is probably one of the best packing articles I’ve seen! I pack quite similarly, black & white plus blue jeans. I really like the styles of tops you bring! Hi-heels aren’t for me so I take ballet flats. I need to find a packable blazer like yours. Thank you for all the great tips and making a short informative article.
I have watched this article more than a few times over the past few years…surely I am not alone. If people think that the palette is boring, just use the pieces shown as a template of sorts. Use pieces that coordinate that are your style. I personally do not get tired of black & white, but love to throw in a camel or pink sweater, a print blouse, scarves, etc. Wearing the same bottom totally makes sense for simplicity’s sake. Great info, thank for sharing, enjoy!
I think your trips are much higher end than mine have been. That being said, I usually pack for 1 week no matter how long the trip is. I’ve done a few 3-week trips on 1 week’s worth of carry-on. Although it does depend on the airline’s carry-on limit (7-10kg). 3-4 bottoms and 6-7 tops, walking shoes/sandals, nicer heels and maybe thongs (flip flops). A good jacket/coat, backpack and maybe a smaller bag depending on the type of trip. Depends on where you’re going, time of year and what you’re gonna be doing so it really comes down to that. I do like how she put a bunch of stuff into a big tote for the plane. And a few choice pieces of jewellery – just keep to basics on a trip and the biggest piece of advice I could give about travel packing is take what you’re prepared to lose. All that old shitty stuff that’s wearing out, pack that. Because if it gets lost or stolen, it doesn’t matter. It happened to me. That’s how I learned to travel light.
Very helpful for those of us who don’t travel often, and for every day fashion-challenged… I don’t have any travel plans, but the outfit ideas are great for home life too! You are just beautiful, I’m so jealous of your makeup and style. But I really have to know where the carryon tote bag is from! And it looks like a matching suitcase. Probably way more than I can afford, but I’d love to know the brand… I know this article is old (YouTube just suggested it today) but I hope you still see this and can respond. Hugs!!
Your tips snd style is Right On!! I bought the basic blk jacket and the skimpy heels. Wonderful. I always wear blk and white for three weeks travel. The brand I swear by is Vince also linen casual pants and white sleeveless top. I get many compliments. I don’t wear a dress traveling alone unless it’s long in conservative country. Thank you so much for your guidance!!
CJ: Love these simple ideas to maximize a week of outfits with a carryon – very doable for touring or casual trip from spring to fall. I do this for business, as well. Even winter is easy with more layers. Traveling once or twice every month, I’ve found the older I get, the more I want to do carryon only. Why? Lost and delayed baggage can absolutely ruin a business trip and my budget when I need to chase down business attire for an early morning meeting. Not fun (and sometimes not even possible, depending on where I happen to be.) The small hassle of lifting my bag into an overhead is more than worth the confidence that everything I need for my trip is with me. If I have a tight window to get to a meeting or activity, the benefit is that I can head straight for a taxi or Uber, bypassing the luggage carousel. More important: I have learned that tourism traveling in Europe and other international destinations requires smaller carryon bags (regional planes) and ease of movement once on the ground (trains that have two minute stops which makes wrestling large bags foolish, buses with limited storage and short stops.) Less baggage also lowers my international travel costs significantly — since you are charged by the size and number of bags for regional planes, taxis, shuttles. Once I realized that the odds of a bag being lost or delayed is 1 in 250 — and airlines don’t consider a bag truly ‘lost’ until it’s been missing for 21 days – the stress of worrying about whether my luggage would make it on quick layovers inspired me to be a lifetime Team Carryon member.
Enjoyed your article & ideas. Even though time has passed, I will realign a bit for my age & comfort, I have preplanned & can do almost the same w/comfort & easy roll fabrics for carry on. We’ve been fortunate in traveling often & retirement has been an adventure. I must admit Skeechers are a must wear now at 76. Just some adaptations to aging needs but thank goodness for ‘golf cart vehicles’ in big airports!!!! Happy travels everyone!
This is awesome! Been looking for new wardrobe ideas & yours is sooo much more flattering that the whole look offered at Kohls I just sadly waded thru! Only I am soooos sick of BLACK BLACK BLACK! It’s so everywhere & reminds me of sad pple in Russia who are Super oppressed. I also had to wear black in the past over & over for ministry/singing in conferences. Love what we do….and we wore some colors as well but mostly it was blk & white for yrs. I am an artist/love watercolors & need color in my life. So I will take your ideas & update what black items I have that is still in style & add to them the blouses you show only find some maybe in shimmer Lt pinks. Keep these ideas coming. They really help as I like your style! Thanks so much!
Loved this and could have used it a month ago when I overpacked lol!! But one tip my mother gave me years ago (which is same as you but the other way) is to wear a clean outfit for the evening and then dress down the next day. Definitely saving this for the future. Also thought it would be really good to see up close how you put each item into the carry on.. maybe a part 2? But thank you for sharing 🙏
There is nothing more annoying to me than squeezing onto a plane with a rolling bag, searching for my seat while looking for open spots to put my carry on, ruffling through my bag to get the things I need out of it, then hefting the honkin’ carry on up over my head, then squeezing my bag into the compartment. Then when everyone is rushing to get off the plane having to heft down my bag again, putting away things, and trying to get me and my bag off the plane before everyone behind me gets too impatient to be polite. No thank. I check my bag, with everything I need in it, including full size products like sunscreen and take my little bag on the plane with just what I need. I slip into my seat quickly and easily. Then I easily slip back out when we arrive and patiently wait for my bag. No hassle, no lifting, no worries. Pick up my little checked bag and make it to transport about the same time as the people who were struggling to get their bags out of the overhead compartments. You think carry on is the way to go, but the older you get, and the more interested in comfort you become, the less glamorous it becomes.
Loved your sage wisdom and explanation on how you arrived at your decisions! Really helped seeing each option too! I have a faux leather blazer and carry it for the same reason you trust your leather pants. Which I never thought about until you connected the dots-which are easily cleanable and wipeable. 🤣 So many have suggested to try your line and I haven’t yet made the plunge. What is the first item you know will make me come back for more? PS. YOU ARE IN DEED A PACKING GENIUS. Seriously, one tote, one carry on, tata to the luggage carrousel,💥mind blown.
Late to the (packing) party, I know 😉 but just wanted to say I loved and appreciated your advice in this article. The outfits looked lovely! Unfortunately, in the UK (and I believe most of Europe, and it was definitely the case for me in Dubai and Oz) you’re not allowed a carry-on bag plus a tote/handbag if you’re travelling economy, and your toiletries have to be in a see-through plastic bag which you have to show at the airport. It’s a pain, but still do-able with one piece of carry-on. I tend to pack a foldable tote bag or small handbag into my carry-on. Once I’m through customs, I’ll take it out and then put my essentials in there, as I do feel lost without a handbag of some sort! 🙂 Not taking anything away from your article btw, just reality for us economy travellers on this side of the world. 🙂 x
I rarely fly, so I take my real luggage, plus one carry-on. I would rather have what I need, I’m not sure I’d wear the same trousers ( or jeans or whatever) in the day and then that night. I always take 2 pairs of black jeans. 2 dresses. 3 pair of shoes. Moto jacket. Lacy camisoles. I like wearing a separate ensemble at night, that’s just me, lol. Good tips, though. Thank you.
This was amazingly perfect and you are gorgeous with an amazing figure!!! You would look amazing in a burlap bag! 💗 Every outfit was beautiful, simple and chic!!! Thank you for sharing, this is so helpful! I cannot stand lugging a ton of stuff on trips and struggle to pare down to bare minimum! I have ended up kicking myself (for overpacking) on more than one occasion…grumbling “Never Again!!!!” I would LOVE the link to the large floral tote specifically… it seems all the links are for smaller makeup pouches and such! Please don’t tell me it’s discontinued!!! 🥺 💗🙏🌺
Great article and tips. Definitely will rethink my packing for times I only have a carry on case. But, I have to also include; a travel hairdryer ( not all hotels provide one) tongs, hairbrush, travel adaptor, phone charger, PJ”s and dressing gown/cover up, swimsuit, underwear, beach towel, cleanser, moisturiser, deodorant, etc. That’s when things get really tricky. I buy some things in the country I’m travelling to such as sun lotion, shampoo to save space. Think I’ll just stay in the Uk with the car, it’s easier haha!
I love this travel wardrobe article and keep coming back to it as it’s such a versatile guide to travelling a little bit lighter. I’d be so happy if you could do something similar for a winter trip, preferably for a really cold weather winter trip where you need thermals and lots of layers worn with a hat hat, gloves and scarf. It’s a much more challenging scenario. And I’d also love to see a carryon bag pack for mixed climates with both hot and cold weather destinations in the same trip. I’m in Australia so many of my trips encompass summer and winter packing together. All help would be greatly appreciated.
It’s always good to see how to pack. It is such a chore for me to even plan what I am going to pack. I am planning a month to six week trip to England and I am having fits about thinking about what I can do to not overdo it. What you packed is good but I am not you. I would not wear what you wear. I know that on a trip what you pack and how heavy it is is what you end up carrying around. Keeping it simple is key. How many pants and how many tops and how many sweaters/jackets/coats to take? England is a mixed bag of weather even in June. You have some great suggestions and I love that mirror. I always struggle in hotel rooms with makeup mirrors.
I love those tips. I have travelled a lot with a carry on and love it. No waiting at the luggage band, no lost luggage. The toiletries was a problem, but now I have shampoo and balsam bar, body lotion bar, parfume bar, and so on 😆 I will definately use these tips next time I travel but with another color scheme.. I look awful in black.. And there will be plenty of room to my outdoor gear wear. And I will use a small rucksack instead of a tote.. the theme of the holiday determines the accessories 😉
My daughter, a size 10 UK size packs easily for a week in a carry on, however, a size 20/22, however hard I try I cannot fit the same amount of clothing in a carry-on as the smaller size. Neither weight or volume so this doesn’t help me at all!! I have since lost 60kgs weight and I should not have a problem with my trip luggage next time
Really like your article and agree with your suggestions. But as far as doing checked luggage, I have traveled for 40 to 50 years. And when I travel I like to take different types of clothes for the different activities that I plan to do. Some activities of formal events require an evening dress. Also I do not like lugging a suitcase all through the airport. I am used to check the suitcase and carry a small, either leather bag or nice purse on board. Going through New York City airports, DFW, Miami, LA, or other airports, the suitcases come out rather quickly by the time I get to the carousel after landing. I personally think people are taking on too large of a suitcase on board. Now if like you, one carries a small bag on board, that’s ok.
Love this article…all great ideas for staying chic and being able to carry your own luggage around! Great! I know the Sandles you listed are not the ones you were wearing…and I’m CRAZY for the ones you were wearing… even if they aren’t available now…or even if they are crazy expensive, could you generously share the brand and style? Thank you…I’m a new subscriber!
Wonderful, informative article with great ideas and lots of style! What about underwear? What about hair? Nails? ie: curling iron, shampoo & conditioner, brushes, nail polish & remover & implements? I love the mirror & hope it’s breakable! Also, chargers, extension cords & a night light? These are all items I’ve found I must have with me.
First of all, I don’t mind checking a bag. I don’t understand the big aversion to checking a bag. Secondly, where are her toiletries? Where is her shampoo and conditioner, hairspray, deodorant, soap, razor, cologne, brushes, hair styling products? Where is her hair dryer, straightening iron, curling iron? What about if you’re traveling to a cold climate? How do you pack all the coats, scarves, sweaters, socks, boots, and hats in a carry-on?
We went to Europe at Christmas several years ago. No way could I have gotten my 2 weeks of clothing in just a carry-on (especially heavy winter coats, hats, gloves!)…We had temps from 64 F down to 30 F and it was sometimes snowy/slushy and my clothes got wet and dirty and ummm….stinky! We moved from hotel to hotel a lot so I didn’t even have time for anything to be hand-washed and dried before packing and moving on. But I LOVE these ideas for warm weather traveling.🥰🥰
My empty soft side carry on bag weighs 7 lbs. BUT after packing summer clothes for 6 days, shoes (2 pr sandals) minimal makeup, toiletries (travel size), hair tools & phone charger, it weighed 27 lbs and was a real pain to lift in & out of my car! (5 times in all, including when I loaded to leave & return home!) Suggestions?
Dang it. You look fabulous, but after years of runway model auditions where I had to wear nothing but black black black, I’m so over it. And white is not particularly flattering near my face. I’m all about color, ESPECIALLY on vacation. Also, leather pants don’t breathe, sorry but that’s gross just to think about. So there are a couple challenges for you.
I’m off to the UK for a month staying with family. BUT I’m 75 – these beautiful clothes will not suit me 😹😹😹 l can imagine brother’s comments if l rocked up in heels and black leather pants – mutton dressed as lamb ; cougar wannabe. Joking apart there are still very good points covered in this article.
Just happened on here and was about to give you a “well done” until you pulled that make up mirror out. Seriously? Who is that obsessed by makeup perfection that you’d pac that whole BIG THING. Anyway the rest of made sense depending on your life style. We tend to have beach vacays so wondering where the more “practical l clothes are. Shorts, short skirt, flat sandals…. Anyway those are certainly nice outfits and make choices easy…
I believe in only one carry on but only good walking shoes like Smart Balance or Vionics, no heels for cobblestones,no skin showing for old arms so sun dress is out. Fabrics must be easy to wash by hand. Tops must cover belly bulge and be good for visiting churches ( must have sleeves and can’t be see through). A good wardrobe for all ages is neutral and has no more than 15 pieces including a rain coat. Makeup should be minimal but moisturizing. Jewelry is a no no. I only wear a small gold wedding bandhuggy earrings. I buy a cheap watch (flea market) to wear. Thieves go after someone wearing jewelry. Only carry an anti theft bag or cross body that can’t be slashed and ripped from you. On a vacation be comfortable. Don’t worry about being stylish. You probably are never going to see anyone agin or who knows you. Carry only small sample sizes of health and beauty products. Unless you are going off grid there will be places to fill in what you run out off. Take a vacation from style.
What you’re not understanding is that you are a 4 from “Dressing Your Truth” and can wear black flawlessly. You are a secondary 1, which is light and fun. I know this just from your facial structure and reading her book. Unless a person is a primary or secondary 4, black will fade them out, both emotionally and visually. While your packing premise works genreally, black is not the end all solution. Dark blues and browns can often work. Or beiges and pinks. Whatever, a person needs to know their personality profile and not rely on type 4 recommendations. You are gorgeous, by the way, a typical 4 characteristic.
I would love to see a article showing how you actually pack the bag – I must be doing something wrong because I almost fill a carryon bag just going away overnight! Undies and pj’s?? LOL, I have size 9.5 shoes so even 2 pairs take up a lot of space (sandals are not too bad) … But I really liked how you actually modeled the outfits that helps a lot! I subscribed, so will check out other articles and the mirror is really interesting! No issues with breakage??
I like the concept but none of these stykes flatter a short curvy pear shape girl like me and stark black and white doesn’t flatter my skin tone. Sure wish there was a coordinated plan that I looked cute in because I wouldn’t look cute in any of these except maybe that one dress. No I wouldn’t either, don’t say 3vrtyone lookks hoid in these, they don’t. These aren’t universal. Not everyone is skinny.
These tips are cool in theory, but not practical for traveling in hot/humid climate where you’re sweating all day. I’d need fresh clothes for night time. And the re-wearing of bottoms would/tops would be highly limited, unless you do laundry. I always pack in a carry-on, but bring way more clothes because I sweat a lot 😂
Unfortunately, this packing concept only works if you don’t sweat. I can’t wear a sweater more than once or a blazer for a few days unless it’s made of a natural material, which is not the case with Zara, for example, which means I need at least 7 T-shirts for a week, depending on the outside temperature, even more when it’s hot, the same goes for dresses, even with evening wear I have to wear something fresh every day, because these silky tops are mostly made of synthetic fibers. Unless you have the opportunity to wash your clothes on site, then less is possible. But for women who don’t have these problems, it’s definitely a great concept.
I’m short, so Im not supposed to wear a cropped pair of jeans, it would make me look shorter. I would use a regular length pair, and also, because if I were to wear a pair of jeans that’s too different and distinct, like cropped, with rhine stones, embroidered, etc, then people can see that I’m wearing the same pair over and over again. Thank you for this article!!! 🌷
Like your article. But it use to be expected to check in luggage. There were sky caps that would help you with luggage etc. We traveled all over the world in the 60s 70s 80s and people would take four or five bags they were all checked in. we had help and then there was help to take them into the taxi or if you had a driver waiting for you. This idea that we have to pack everything and carried on for me is kind of rough.
I am 70 so I will not look model perfect like this lovely lady. To be young again! But I I traveled a Fall trip (actually summer weather) with black top and light fabric pants, blue tops, blue and black tops for 43 days. Color scheme black and blue. Winter trip to Portugal I took same color tops in both long sleeve and short sleeve and black pants plus long underwear and heavier fleece lined. Long underwear as pajamas when not need for the cold. 1 cardigan bright blue, 1 blue over wool sweater, puffer jacket, gloves, winter scarf for the cold as well as nice scarves to change things up. 10lbs clothes
So happy that I’ve accidentally came across your website . I’ve been a fan and user of Jouer for years, professionally (I’m a makeup artist) and on myself as well. So, thank you for creating jouer and will gratefully keep supporting your brand because it’s AMAZING.! Enjoyed this article as well, is the large tote out of stock? Love it 🙂 xx
Love this! Just returned from Italy and then Chile. I am learning to plan and pack better each time. This article helped a lot. I really appreciate the links you provide…(now if I can find them again). I JUST completed curating and purchasing an all black “workout” outfit with light jacket. It’s packed in a cube…ready for my next trip. Thank you!
Thank you for this amazing article!! On my first trip to Italy I was “worried” about what to bring and didn’t want to bring a ton of clothes I’d have to carry and probably never wear. I followed your directions and it was the best decision I made. Your suggestions guided me on what I needed to buy and how to maximize the use of my clothes.
Ok I was skeptical of the leather pants because from the swampy part of the Gulf Coast region that sounds like literal torture, but then you explained that they wipe clean and I also remembered that BECAUSE I love in a hot, humid swamp, I get cold REALLY easily everywhere else. Now I need to buy leather pants 😂
