What Pastimes Does Maya Angelou Enjoy?

Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Ann Johnson in 1928, was a multifaceted American poet, dancer, singer, activist, and scholar. Her first autobiographical work, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, gained critical acclaim and a National Book Award nomination. Angelou’s hobbies and interests were reflected in her love for dance, cooking, activism, and traveling. She worked as a cook, streetcar conductor, waitress, singer, dancer, editor, teacher, civil rights organizer, and actress before becoming one of America’s most beloved writers.

Another notable honor she received was a Pulitzer Prize nomination and two NAACP Image Awards for outstanding literary work. Angelou’s interest in the written word and the English language was evident from an early age, and she wrote essays, poetry, and kept a journal throughout her childhood. When she returned to Arkansas, she took an interest in poetry and memorized works by Shakespeare and Poe.

She attended Mission High School and won a scholarship to study dance and drama at San Francisco’s Labor School, where she was exposed to progressive dance and drama.
