📹 Dear Overwhelmed Moms, Self-Care Isn’t Selfish | Liz Carlile | TEDxColoradoSprings
Self-care and self-love is the key to changing everything in your life. When her son was 6 weeks old, Liz found herself crying on …
Why is self-care necessary?
Self-care is a vital aspect of overall well-being, offering numerous benefits such as improved physical health, enhanced mental and emotional well-being, increased productivity and focus, better relationships, increased self-esteem and self-worth, and prevention of burnout. Clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, stress, and improve concentration, self-care can also help reduce heart disease, stroke, and cancer. It also helps maintain spiritual connection and help individuals realize their purpose in life.
Regular exercise, sleep, and nutritious meals can enhance physical health, boost energy levels, and strengthen the immune system. Mental health is crucial, and self-care can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Prioritizing self-care allows for more emotional resources to invest in relationships, preventing burnout and enabling individuals to present their best selves in interactions with others.
In addition, self-care practices can boost self-esteem and self-worth by recognizing one’s needs and engaging in activities that make you feel good. Regular self-care can also help prevent burnout, a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. This is especially important for those working in the helping professions.
Why is self awareness important in parenting?
Self-awareness is crucial for parents to make intentional choices and interact with others in a way that aligns with their values and goals. According to Naumburg, a social worker and author of the Psych Central blog “Mindful Parenting”, practicing mindfulness with curiosity and kindness is the best way to enhance self-awareness. Enrolling in a meditation course can help improve self-awareness and help parents make more congruent choices with their children.
Why is self-care important for single moms?
Many single parents feel the need to provide respite for their children but deny themselves even a short break during the day. This is not a good idea as exhaustion and burnout can hinder effective parenting and negatively impact their children. Self-care is crucial for single parents, as they cannot take care of anyone else without being on stable ground themselves. Exhaustion, emotional spentness, or overwrought can lead to inappropriate conflict and challenge handling. Self-care must be done consciously, dedicated to one’s all-around stress relief and health.
One rule for self-care is to forgive yourself. With so much responsibility placed on one person, it is not surprising that many single parents feel excessive guilt over perceived shortcomings. Friends do not care about the cleanliness of their home, and if they do, they need new friends. Disorganization is to be expected in a household with children, and a wooden sign on the front door can help put things into perspective. By practicing good self-care, single parents can better support themselves and their children.
Why is self-care important for new mothers?
Self-care is crucial postpartum as the body undergoes significant changes during pregnancy and childbirth, allowing it to heal and recover. Proper self-care can speed up this recovery process, reduce complications, and promote overall well-being. Emotionally, becoming a new mom can be overwhelming due to hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and the challenges of caring for a newborn. Creating time for self-care, even if it’s just taking five minutes to relax, can help navigate the emotional rollercoaster of the postpartum period. Health and wellness tools can also help ease the postpartum journey, such as a healthy diet rich in nutrients, which can aid in the recovery process and provide energy needed to care for a newborn.
What is the biggest issue with single parenting?
Being a single parent presents significant challenges, including financial instability, feeling isolated, and feeling inadequacy. Raising a child can be expensive, with unexpected medical bills or car repairs causing financial strain. The author, who worked in the education/childcare field, credits their success to living with their parents, which allowed them to allocate rent for childcare and extras like zoo trips and sports.
They acknowledge that many single parents lack a supportive system, but acknowledge the importance of having a backup plan. Additionally, the author struggles with feelings of failure and inadequacy, as they feel the stigma attached to being a single parent.
Why do single parents need help the most?
Single parent households can be stressful for both adults and children, as they must balance caring for the children, maintaining a job, and keeping up with bills and household chores. The financial and resources of these families are typically reduced after the parents’ breakup. Other pressures and potential problem areas include visitation and custody issues, ongoing conflict, less opportunity for parents and children to spend time together, effects on children’s school performance and peer relations, disruptions of extended family relationships, and problems caused by parents’ dating and new relationships.
Why self-care is important for moms?
Self-care is crucial for mothers as it not only benefits themselves but also their children and family. It is not selfish, as it helps reduce stress, prevent burnout, and promote overall well-being. Prioritizing self-care also improves relationships, boosts confidence and self-esteem, and increases resilience. The World Health Organization reports that one in five mothers experience mental health conditions during pregnancy or the first year after childbirth.
Maternal mental health is an essential public health concern, as it affects not only the mother but also the child’s health, development, and well-being. Postpartum depression is a common condition that affects many mothers, but it is treatable. However, many women are reluctant to seek help due to stigma surrounding mental health. Breaking down barriers and creating a safe environment for mothers to seek help is essential to break down these barriers and improve their overall well-being.
What are the 7 pillars of self-care?
Self-care is crucial, especially during the holiday season, and can be practiced through various methods such as exercise, eating well, meditation, and therapy. These methods fit into the seven pillars: mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational, and social. A well-balanced self-care routine should include each pillar, avoiding limiting oneself to just one or two.
Mental self-care involves creating a healthy mindset through mindfulness and curiosity, such as journaling, meditation, and taking breaks from screen time. Emotional self-care involves creating healthy coping strategies for daily stress, such as watching movies, listening to music, writing positive affirmations, asking for help, and setting boundaries to protect oneself and one’s heart.

Videos like this are so encouraging. I’m 19 weeks pregnant and I’m single and it’s already been hard. I’m so excited and nervous for my baby to get here. I just feel like I let her and myself down not building an established relationship before having her but honestly it wouldn’t have been her if I did it the way I always planned. And for that reason I know she’s special and a true blessing and she was put here during a time I needed the most. Thank you and God bless you!
This is so hard for me being a single mom bc everytime something bad happens it ripple effects everything. And I get back to square 1 again. I want to be financially stable so bad and have better energy and health. & I also have a narcissistic mother that is working against everything I do all the time. I have no drug habits, I don’t drink almost at all, I don’t have a spending habit. I’m just poor and overworked.
I have never felt so lost. I have a 1 and a 2 year old and my partner is leaving me for another woman he has met. We have been together over 12 years, I’ve been by his side battling cancer and then IVF for our children. I feel so betrayed. How can I look after these babies on my own I have no job because I stay at home with them why he works. I’m trying to stay close to god xx
Thank you so so much for your kind and positive words. Thank you for making this article. My kids’ dad and I are divorcing after 6 years of marriage. We have mutually agreed to split and share the kids, to live our different lives separately but still do it for the kids. It’s scary moving forward without the man I thought would be a part of my future…. I need all the encouragement I can get to get through this new chapter of my life.
I am not scared of being a single mother financially, but my son suffering and missing his dad. That kills me ! The dad is drug addict so is not this way is not the other way either. Don’t know which way to go. My son is also very very extremely emotional and I don’t. Know what to do he is only 6 with a very big heart full of love !
Girl, Thank you for making this. Every single thing you said is currently happening. Trying to push through and tonight was one of those nights. I’m learning to be present, even when I don’t want to. On the basis on asking for help, it’s hard when you don’t have much help. Only one person to rely on that I can trust. Hopefully got will show me who else is around to help, that I can trust. Thank you for this article! A blessing trully. ❤
Thank you so much Ma’am. I love the article 😍 just everything you said. Because they really helped me and is still helpful ( most especially the God Factor)… I actually came here to get some encouragement because God is leading me into mentorship and I just can’t help but see others who do this as well.. God bless you ma’am for your impact I love you
Its disturbing to hear people say they don’t be a mother anymore.(Pause) to me when a woman feel this way she wanna be selfish no let these self centered feelings deter you from your purpose as a woman as a mother. Ask God when you feel hopeless and motivated to being a mom and god will restore you back originally to where you spiritually and emotionally need to be.
