I think people are interchanging “fired” and “laid off” which are two different events. To be fired is a pretty serious event meaning you did something wrong. Laid off simply means the company downsized and you no longer had a position. I suppose the end result is the same that you don’t have a job but laid off generally has some incentives and on top of that lets you get unemployment benefits since some states don’t give it to you if you’re “fired” from your job.
