Betsy DeVos, the departing Education Secretary, has been a controversial figure in the US education system. She has been accused of being the most disastrous leader in the department’s history, relentlessly promoting school choice and ending many Obama-era rules. DeVos shares few similarities with her likely successor, Connecticut state. Before coming to Washington, DeVos fought and funded a generation’s worth of education wars on the principles that parents should be free to send their children.
DeVos began her tenure as U.S. Education Secretary with the dubious distinction of being the only Cabinet member in history to need the tie-breaking vote. She often talked about the failures of America’s public education system and touted controversial and unproven claims. The debate about DeVos has been unprecedented for someone heading up a department that represents a minuscule portion of the federal budget.
The debate about DeVos has been unprecedented for someone heading up a department that represents a minuscule portion of the federal budget. Senator Maggie Hassan, a longtime proponent of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), confessed to MSNBC that she was very vague on her answers and failed to bridge to points she should have come to make: her qualifications. Gov. Nancy Wyman stood with members of the East Hartford community to question whether DeVos had done her job.
The meme that puts both Umbridge and DeVos together is quite appropriate and shows that the magical world and the real world might not be that far apart.

📹 Teacher Resigns During Kansas School Board Meeting With Powerful Speech | NowThis
In US news and current events today, teacher Amanda Coffman resigned on the spot during a school board meeting and …
I had 2 teachers snap in class a few years back, one took her degrees off the wall and threw them across the room and she started screaming at all of us (My 2nd hour class was pretty bad to be honest) . For the love of god do not give teachers hand guns. That’s just asking for either a kid to steal it, or a teacher to use it in a way against her students.
Part of her agenda is actually very agreeable. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, muddled by this administration. Being un-influenced by school boards/ unions, Charter schools are public schools too, and education structure is more viable and coherent. However, defunding pub school isn’t most palpable. She does have some great points tho, her method wasn’t good.
The school system situation is actually much bigger than just Betsy DeVos. The states are in charge of their own schooling and they vote for how they want it to be. Poverty is one factor in the equation which should be addressed and then school improvement will follow. All in all, there are too many cooks (states) in the kitchen
I’m not a huge Betsy DeVoss fan, but what is the alternative to allowing kids and their parents to decide which school is best for them? Keeping the system as it is? If you’re a kid in a poor neighborhood where it’s the only place your parents can afford rent, you should be forced to attend ONLY the local school that is likely failing their students? Not to even mention how this will affect literally generations of kids growing up In defecto segregation because in larger cities, there are definitely “white schools” and “black schools”, which is a disgrace. I think a clear, common sense, middle-of-the-road approach would be to allow kids to go to any PUBLIC school of their choice. Of course a portion of the money would follow the child. Principals should be given more power to make more decisions about how their school is run so they can then compete to attract students. The principal’s and teachers should get a bonus every year based partially on the number of students they attract to their school. All the schools would then feel incentivized and empowered to do the best to improve the education and experience of their students and get results for their parents. I can’t believe that the interviewer said that test scores are “up” in the last 25 years as a mark of clear success and then suggested more funding as the only proposed solution. Sure, it’s factually true, but relative to what? Test scores worldwide have all gone up, but our test scores are very flat in comparison to other countries, especially like those with school choice like the Nordic countries.
For her to say she cannot see why students and teachers are hostile towards her and her policies indicate to me a lack of self-awareness on her part. While she has a high level of education without having the background as an educator, she comes across as an anti-intellectual in this interview. She also comes across as ditzy. I know that sounds condescending, but it is what she is.
What a terrible person. I only notice a used car saleswoman vibe, a person who believes only in money in her pockets. Her message is a vague dangerous policy, completely detail free. Modern day narcissist sociopath. Completely narcoleptic ideas based in hope of a more diluted view of society that only exists in gated communities that exclude the rest of us. Republicans think this is the sign of success…..these kinds of people have always pushed us closer to a monarchy. Terrible people that should not have a platform
It isn’t bad to have a;or of helping hands. But if one has to pay for the other because the value of the folks on phones in their houses isn’t noticeable, then the secretary should say 📱 phone 🤳 users are working for her or School needs so minimum wages can be granted down 👇 to SSI and welfare card walkers who are holding up a 5$ min prayer Wall that is loaded with values per page. #PGE
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Amen… Repent and turn from sin! Obey God’s sacred 10 Commandments! Time is running out!
