  • Start with mirepoix, sauteed long enough for the carrots to soften, and the onions caramelise, adding minced garlic three minutes before the onions are done. Then do the rest, minus the onion and garlic powders. Also, adding balsamic vinegar to the mirepoix makes magick. You can (should) also add diced bell (especially orange) peppers with the garlic. My sauce is the best you’ve never had. I can make shoe leather taste like Memphis fine dine. Vegan leather, of course. Preferably minus the nasty foot.

  • As a 19 years old young adult, I developed hypochondria last year, they ruined my days and sleep. Nausea, palpitations, constipation, anxious feeling and fear daily. My anxiety levels are going to normal these days, and I am gradually becoming “better” and “normal” recently. After perusal your articles, you inspired to eat cleaner, healthier, and just better. Unfortunately, I still eat meat, but definitely cleaner than before. I cut out KFC, McDonald’s, pizzas, and just all kinds of junk food. I ate much more veges and fruits and did incorporate your recipe once in awhile. I do not smoke and drink at all and will never touch them. I just want to thank you for your articles, and pls do more of them. Love from Vancouver Richmond : )

  • This reminds me of when i made enchilada sauce. I discovered that it’s basically just a bunch of peppers. Just throw a bunch of chili, paprika and cayenne in some vegetable stock with spices and i think there was a tomato somewhere in there… i can’t remember because i didn’t write it down… but it was good.

  • I can’t wait to try this recipe. I was thinking, why couldn’t you use the water used to soak the dates? Someone else made a great comment. Put the water into the blender after you’ve spooned it out? Put the blender on mix and you will get every drop out. That’s actually how I clean my blender. Fill it with hot water a tiny drop of soap. Put it on mix, a quick rinse and it’s clean! Another tip, when reducing the sauce use a double boiler. It’s the bomb to keep things hot without worrying about your product from burning.

  • I made your recipe this morning. I don’t have liquid smoke so I doubled the smoked paprika as you suggested. I saved the water from the soaked organic Mejooled dates and used the measured amount as you suggested. I use BBQ sauce with raw almonds. I coat about 1 cup at a time then microwave in a glass bowl for a minute. I stir the almonds and put back in the microwave for another minute. I watch so that the sauce doesn’t burn. When the almonds make a popping sound I definitely stop. Then I put them on a plate to cool. I bag them up & give as gifts. My family loves them. Up until now, I have not been able to find a BBQ sauce that was tangy enough without high fructose corn syrup. Your recipe will work. I could even add some Sriracha for extra heat. BBQ sauce works on raw walnuts, pecans, etc. BTW, I love you & Crystal. You 2 are a great team. Keep up the great work.

  • Absolutely LOVE these make it at home recipe articles. I don’t purchase bbq sauce because I truly wouldn’t use it frequently enough before it goes bad so making it at home (with all this stuff I do, in fact, always have on hand) is AMAZING! I can totally scale down your recipe so I only make what I need and it’s SO much healthier 💖🙏🙏🙏

  • So many Derek moments in one article I thought I was perusal a parody website LOL I have never had BBQ sauce I suspect it is very North American So I probably won’t be making this But it is good to see you making a wholesome version BTW Worcestershire should be pronounced as WUUS ter sher Ignore the “-rce-” in the middle.

  • I’m so glad you made this recipe. My boyfriend and I bought a 5 kilo box of dates for the first time and I thought we would go through them faster. I did not realise they had to go in the fridge so now I really need to use them before they go bad. I am definitely going to try this out as I really want to do the mango salad dressing recipe. Perfect as we buy mangos by the box of 6 😄

  • So, it turns out Derek is eating barbecued meat when the cam is off, I’m disappointed, dude…😋 Yeah, a good BBQ sauce should always be on your essentials list, not only for your vegan meats but also on salads, with rice, in sandwiches, on spaghetti anything you can think of, including your girlfriend!… The Nutribullet looks like a nuclear weapon (don’t forget to hide it when Crytal is mad… 😬). The Vitamix got jealous and mad! It said: “C’mon!.. C’mon mf!! I’m gonna kick your …” Don’t let it bully you or you won’t be able to make the articles in the kitchen anymore… 🥊… This BBQ looks pretty easy to make, I’ll try it this week; nothing like home-made food … PS Your muscles are bigger today (I’m not getting out of the closet!.. not yet, not yet 😋)…

  • Much as I love hearing Americans struggle with the acrobatic tongue-twisting efforts to pronounce ‘Worcestershire’, it’s really cute, I thought I’d give you the heads up on the UK pronunciation, it’s actually ‘wooster’. Yep, short and sweet, don’t be fooled by the complicated spelling. There are many examples like this, another is Leicester: ‘lester’’. 😍👍

  • Hey all, I just bought some blackstrap molasses. Once home I noted this warning (shortened) on the back: “this may expose you to lead and acrylamide & cause cancer according to California”. Anyone know if this is a consideration with all of this type of molasses or just this brand, Golden Barrel? and is it a real concern if one does not plan to use a LOT of this product, just occasional? TX!!!

  • I’ve been eating a TON of dates lately. Seriously, I use them as a sweetener and eat them whole. Lately my poop has been strange also—normal looking, but it makes the water around it yellow. I swear I thought I was dying… until I saw your soaked dates. I instantly thought “man, those look like turds.” Then after a couple days I figured out that’s why my stool turns the water yellow. Sorry that’s kinda gross but at least I know why now haha!

  • I saw a article that you posted a year ago about what do vegans eat find out in my kitchen. I decided that starting tomorrow Tuesday after Labor Day that I’m going to make a switch for two weeks to see if I can handle going vegan. My concern is going to be more protein and also transitioning off beef chicken and pork. I’m very excited because at 47 years old I know that I want to clean out my system and at the same time have better skin stronger bones and most importantly, loose weight!! I am nervous and yet excited for the journey that’s ahead of me. I did subscribe and I also hit the bell so that way I can be on top and not fall back. One of my weakest problems is processed foods especially like pizza so I’m hoping that I would be able to find tricks to help fight the urge .

  • Would you say how much you spend on groceries to eat like you do. We spend quite a bit like 300 a week on 4 of us but we don’t eat ginormous salads like that or meals. I would love to eat that much! But to be honest husband and kids like the vegan cheeses and replacement food which are a little pricey with multiple items.

  • I have that same tablespoon set! 🤣😂 Just amused that I had to murder a can of tomato paste to open it yesterday. (Could only get half of it cut with the can opener, then just shoved the lid down into the can enough to get to said sauce bc I couldnt get it to cut anymore!) So. Actually nice to see someone else struggle. Even if it was bc it was upside down!

  • sooo glad the nacho cheese article introduced me to your website. i’ve spent the last week perusal as many of your backlist vids as i can! i’m a few weeks into my plant based journey and you/your recipes have made it even more awesome. thank you for doing what you do. thinking my closet needs a simnett nutrition hoodie…

  • Kind of late to the party but . . . I tried this recipe. Delicious!!! I didn’t follow the measurement exactly but pretty close. There was still tomato paste in my can so I used it all. Probably an extra tbs or so. I tossed in an extra date bc I like it sweet and my spices were mostly closer to heaping than scant! As he said, it was delish as is and better cooked. Oh, I was doubtful about that amount of smoke but had enough ingredients to dbl the recipe if it was too much. 12, though, was just right! Def thumbs up!

  • Derek it’s 6:40am here in N.Z & can’t wait to make this. I’m sipping on lemon & honey right now perusal this. Derek have you made sweet chilli sauce, if not can you make a vid on it. My son & I love the stuff. As always you brighten my day. Stay safe out there & have a wonderful day/night brother. ✌🏾💚🤙🏾🤗🔥🔥🔥
