  • I have classes that are costing me thousands of dollars and never once spoken to the teachers. Everything is computer generated and graded by the computer. They literally do nothing and charge full price. Still being charged student activities fees and campus is closed. That is the real story not that students use the internet to research answers.

  • This show is complete & utter BS! I have 4 “teachers” this semester, I can only tell you what ONE of them looks & sounds like. Why is that? The teachers at my school don’t even hold classes. No Zoom or Microsoft Teams..NOTHING. How am I supposed to learn Calculus with no actual teacher?? That’s the problem, not students trying their best to absorb information on their own & turning to Google because it’s a better teacher.

  • Look, don’t blame the students here. This has been a much bigger problem for much longer than anyone wants to admit. The problem is the fact that everything is based on grades: scholarships, banks, jobs, etc, but that grades are arbitrary. Grades are supposed to mean that someone has put a lot of effort in and/or knows the material very well, yet every single student in America knows someone who just memorized the information and forgot it, or those that are just naturally intellectually gifted and that never had to try very hard. What you’re seeing right here is not a problem of cheating, though that may seem like it’s the case. What you’re seeing right here is a bunch of students adapting to meet the goals set by the university (aka, getting good grades), and then being punished when they meet those goals, simply because they didn’t do it the exact way they were supposed to. Now, if you want students to stop cheating, all you’ve got to do is change the goals. If learning were actually about learning, guess what, you wouldn’t have these record high levels of cheating, because then there wouldn’t be a point to it. Cheaters wouldn’t be rewarded for good grades, and they wouldn’t be able to pass the classes, either.

  • Teachers are also guilty of being lazy and unwilling to evaluate their ineffective teaching methods. If they ask questions that can easily be looked up on tests, they’re doing something wrong. It’s honestly just as ineffective as having students memorize and throw up answers they won’t retain long term anyway.

  • It’s not our fault that college forces us to take classes that we don’t even care about in the “core curriculum.” Since college is obviously a money grab from us we may as well make it easier for ourselves. We wouldn’t cheat as much in the classes we actually care about because we actually want to know the material in those classes.

I have incredible teachers who creat their own original work, and googling it will get you nowhere unless you know what to Google for, all of that taking way too much time for one question. Students will ALWAYS try to find a easier way out.

  • I struggle with college online. It’s so easy to zone out and it’s pointless to attend zoom lectures if your internet isn’t stable. Professors aren’t usually fluent with the technology and a lot of classes aren’t made to be taken online, like science classes. You don’t get lab experience from a box in the mail.

One night during class, right before a test, one of my professors told the class that he approached the department head once and asked, “Why are we making these students take tests without their notes and textbooks? When they start working in their field, they’re going to have access to books, the internet, and their coworkers as sources of information for things they don’t know.” He said the department head thought he was insane for asking that. I had already enjoyed him as a professor; and my like for him increased that night. He was right though. Information is at the tip of our fingertips nowadays via smart phones, tablets, and PCs. You can Google just about anything!

  • To be honest, with this world being around internet, it’s unrealistic that you would not have access to google. Doctors use google, engineers use google. The skill of seeking information and going out to find information is way more useful because I will forget everything I’ve learned in a class within a month

Teachers are being lazy and the schools are charging full tuition for classes where the teachers don’t even show they’re face. Also students are extremely unmotivated at this place in time so I don’t know what they expect. I feel bad for every family paying tens of thousands of dollars for their kid to be sitting in their room all day.

  • My microbiology teacher phrases her questions in a way that is not easy to google. She tells her students this in the beginning of the class. But her homeworks that are due before the tests always prep you enough. You’re fairly familiar with the material and the questions make sense just from doing to the homework.

  • Sometimes what you learn in class is not on the test. Looking up an answer online does not mean you are not learning, I’ve studied for hours and once I take an exam the wording is different from the way you might have studied it, that is because the professors are not creative and they use a generic quiz for most of their career. I like quizzes where critical thinking is applied, I can respond in my own words, and get feedback from the professor.

  • I think if tests and quizzes are going to have all these googleable questions, they are asking for it. And most of the majors or classes they are taking aren’t useful especially if they are just going to learn everything on the job. I’m a business major, why should I care if I cheat on my history exam? Unless it’s for medical, law school, and the like, the schools should stop with all this “honor” bs especially since all these fields have no honor or honesty, and do nothing but cut corners once you actually work them.

She’d say “you can use your books, phones, an exam from last year’s course… I really don’t mind.” Turns out she made 5 different exams per course and designed the questions herself.   • This is the reason, in my experience as an English teacher in the Bronx, I never administered tests/exams with multiple choice or true/false. Every question I created from scratch required a short answer (a few sentences in your own words) or essay response. I want to know what YOU know about the topic. Show me your critical thinking skills, your ability to explicate ideas, and coherently describe concepts. I’ve always designed my assessments so that you having to explain how you know what you know is an unavoidable necessity. My students struggled, but in the end… even the ones with special needs went to college and excelled because of it. Many of them, including one who is autistic, and in their first semester of undergraduate English, they made B averages. The student with autism, made a B+ with little or no support. I worked with each and every one of them, stayed up most nights and after school making sure that the lessons I planned were rigorous, engaging, and more importantly, required them to think, research, and evaluate. I loved being a teacher and I loved those kids enough to give them an education they deserved.

  • Even if you don’t cheat, it’s ridiculously easy to pass classes nowadays. Just memorize facts or formulas and plug them into a calculator and you’ve got your answer. There’s no critical thinking or applied knowledge in assignments or tests and getting A’s are pretty much the norm, regardless if you cheated or not. Multiple choice questions is definitely not a measure of a student’s mastery in a subject and teachers need to stop lying to themselves.

  • In the real world, your resourcefulness to utilise information for an outcome is more important than just memorisation. If anything, this should be encouraged so that students become more liberal with analysing and critically processing sources under time pressure. Besides, if you haven’t studied (particularly in engineering exams), you’re basically screwed anyway, so the internet can only help you so much.

  • To be honest, I think this was needed to show universities and schools that the way we currently learn and get tested is stupid and just memorising. I’ve learnt much more this year in uni because for ONCE the teachers actually tested understanding rather than memorisation because otherwise we could have cheated (we also now have mainly only open book exam).   • My online classes were rigorous! It depends on the institution. They were very strict we had to submit assignments into a system to check for plagiarism and then turn them in to the professor. We had to make sure our references aligned with the assignments. Online education is not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

  • Not my university though. They’re very strict. They require 2 devices for each exam, a computer and a phone. And the university had gone as far as they bought the whole Speedexam program just so they can take control over students’ computer during exam (preventing open new tabs and using the shortcut keys on the keyboard). Also the phone is used as a live article call, and we are asked to place it at a certain angle so they can track our activities. Not allowed to use headphone and talking too.

  • Yet students are still charged full tuition for online courses. Professors are holding students to the same standards but the students are not getting the value that they payed for. Really sad to see adults not rationalizing that online classes are much more difficult for the students, rather they would go after kids that are trying to “cheat” and use any online resource considering your entire curriculum is through the computer. They don’t care how much information a student can absorb online, they just want your tuition check.

  • You can’t blame Chegg for hosting solutions. I blame teachers for reusing the same exams over and over and over again. In the real world, you go out and you can literally do anything to find the answer. No resource is off limits. What I would do is design the exams or projects in a way that required PROPER participation from everyone and make them open note. We had open note exams in my engineering classes and the majority of the class would still do poorly.

  • Majority of my exams were open book/open notes. You could do whatever. Best about it was that I knew what to do to change answers to make sure that I changed answers enough to make it not word for word from the answers. And I’d use majority of my time for the test to actually take the test. Actually one time I finished the test in less than half the allotted time, so I sat there and I worked on another assignment on Microsoft Word on another device while I waited for the time to go through more (no I was not on camera). So honestly it was the best scenario for me.

  • Kent State is charging full “in person” tuition for classes that have a scheduled meeting time on zoom. And an additional fee for the online classes that do not have set meeting times and are 100% learn on your own classes. My tuition doubled this year and I haven’t even been on campus once. That should be the headline, not students cheating.

  • I am a current online student and and older college student at that. I have never once thought, let’s cheat to get the answer. I’d rather just spend 40hours a week studying. Yes it’s exhausting, I get it, but I have a few morals left and rather know I earned my degree 100%. I hope it benefits me long term. Not everyone cheats.

  • Even if you are doing in person classes nothing is stopping you from looking stuff up especially since laptops are allowed in most classrooms. The only thing that would change is cheating on tests. And to stop kids from cheating on tests all you need to do is make the questions unique to you class then they can’t look it up.

I just do it on the Homework mainly and on tests and quizzes where it’s open book. Do I suffer on non-open book testing? Heck yeah I do.   • One of my profesors made us download a program called proctorio to make sure no one cheats. She’s smart. It records the computer screen while we take the test, and it records the student while taking the test. Online learning is really hard but like my professor I have right now she’s smart and she teaches us and is available to us her students. We need more teachers like her

College is just about a piece of paper to get a job, real learning happens when you are engaged in doing projects related to your career, not in college. Im doing IT and I learned way more doing things in my free time than in college.

  • I had a Physics professor who told my class that it was okay to use any resources for tests, because she didn’t know how to use Respondus Lockdown Browser. After my class took our finals, sharing notes, helping each other find the answers and whatnot, she accused one of the students of cheating. After she literally told us all at the beginning of the semester it was okay for us to use any resources we had for her exams, sigh

  • 3 Steps for professors to stop students from Googling the answer, 1) Create your own test questions rather than copying and pasting from the text book 2) Create multiple versions of the test with similar difficulty and create a time limit 3) Actually care for your students and give them resources to succeed

  • It is extremely hard to work wearing a double mask. Fear of losing a job in the pandemic. Attending online classes. Which is completely difficult to understand. I don’t mean to say cheating is good. These online services are homework helpers. They have tutors. Schools cannot provide tutoring like before the pandemic. Teachers cannot give 100% to every student in the class.

  • Suggestion particularly for every school: PLEASE STOP COPYING QUESTIONS FROM A MF WEBSITE AND PASTE IT INTO THE TEST PAPER LIKE WHY CANT YALL MAKE UP YOUR OWN. STEALING A QUESTION FROM A WEBSITE WILL HAVE A HIGH CHANCE FOR STUDENTS TO CHEAT AND THIS REALLY AFFECTS THEIR KNOWLEDGE FOR THE SUBEJCT THEYRE GETTING TESTED FFS. Anyways another thing is that we can use a website in order for students to take their test and monitor them whether theyre cheating or not by using exam.net which is a useful web for students to take exams for literally every subject and it has a function where everytime someone leave the exam.net web, they’ll get locked from the exam and they gotta state their reason which requires to be excuseable.

  • It is the teachers’ mistake too. They put fixed correct answer on every question and just check the score of the student later on. They should check each answer, Google the answer if they it is copy paste, and check if the answer is related to the ones that were discussed. Because Google and the current lesson is different.

  • To be honest, they are doing all this for grades when experience is more important. But I can understand their reasoning because college is not easy and you can be put on probation if your grades drop. So, I get it. The fact that they are open about cheating (publicly) with no fear is insane. I’m required to write “I pledge” on all my assignments in high school. I’m mortified of the consequences.

  • I’ve taken 4 online classes so far in college and I don’t cheat but if anyone is they could easily find out. In my precalc class, we weren’t allowed to use notes or any other resources so we had to take the tests while being recorded with camera and mic (it wouldn’t even let you take it if you didn’t have both) and in a lockdown browser. Couldn’t close the lockdown thing until you finished and if your eyes looked another direction (looking at notes), if they see an extra light from like your phone, if they hear pages flipping, or if you get up and leave the professor would assume you were cheating. If you look in one direction for too long, that’s also suspicious. Ofc they can hear your pencil if you’re actually writing. And, we had to pass a verification thing before starting where you had to show the area around you with your whole desk and everything. In english, they used an ai detector that gives you a percentage of how much words are the same and in the same order as any source online. The rest of my classes have been open notes and if I need to find a keyword quickly in them I can just ctrl+f.

  • This shows not a learning disability or a informational issue, this shows that students are undisciplined and schools are disappointing. The score matters more than the education, and students are too undisciplined to be able to understand that they’re screwing themselves over of the knowledge they need to perform the career they decided to pursue. This is why homeschoolers are better, it teaches more than knowledge, it teaches skills like discipline. These aren’t college students, they’re middle schoolers paying to stay in school so they can live in an imaginary land of “I’m being productive and colleging to better myself” when instead they’re going into debt to get a degree or knowledge 80% of them will never need.

  • Honestly, my hope is if we automatically went back to in person teaching only, professors and teachers will be more serious about us learning instead of worrying about making the grade. That’s part of the reason students are cheating anyways, is because teachers and professors can’t teach. It is a rarity that I can find teachers and professors are passionate about teaching us in schools anymore, while the rest of them are on the internet. All students are focused on now is trying to get their degrees and be done with it, but the learning part isn’t really there. Where some of the faculty that universities hire are even more incompetent then what they claim to try to protect in regards to academic honesty. I mean for Christ sakes all of these reporters have more then likely done it once! And at the end of the day so as long as the college is making money I really don’t see much enforcement going on.

  • What are we supposed to do? The whole point of school is memorizing not learning. We can’t remember everything they want us to do. we have to find a way to not fail. At least when we were in person, the teachers are there and could help. With online school I cannot retain anything. That’s the blessing and the curse of using internet technology in this context. You can use it to cheat your way through school and learn nothing substantial. Or you can learn about practically anything and do it on your own without resorting to formal education systems and out-of-touch institutions that put you in debt. The choice is there and more often than not people choose the former option because it requires less of them in the short term. And that’s a paradox considering most people go to college with the hope of attaining long term financial security. Debt is counter to this.

  • Tbh I think as you get higher and higher in your discipline the amount of reliable material online REALLY thins out. Out of curiosity I have looked at Chegg’s material for differential geometry and every single solution I looked at was way off the mark. It was pretty apparent that somebody who had no experience with the material was just winging it.

  • This just means that’s the ball is in the student’s court. The way modern education system imparts knowledge is back dated and completely useless. No wonder people are cheating. Its all about mugging up useless information, instead of actually learning the “Why”. This never affected me much, cause I’m a computer science student. When my professor was teaching us all PHP 5.0. I was learning PHP 8.0 just from googling, and reading official documentations. My solution to this issue, is to take open book examinations.REAL OPEN BOOK EXAMINATIONS. Ask in-depth descriptive questions, which requires logical thinking, and forces the student to think about the “Why”, and not just mugging things up, writing it on a piece of paper.

  • Who gets on national news to tell the world that the degree you went to college for to obtain is a complete fraud? Who is Parenting theses kids? Even if I was cheating that college debt is still real. Imma fake it till I make it for the job I went to college for. Theses people just told their future employers “My Degree doesn’t mean anything..” Now I see why a manager at Macy’s has a degree in computer science..

  • I’m in a undergraduate program and cheating is not allowed, my sister is in a actual research based Juris Master program where they use books with everything and for everything . She remembers the material 10 times better than she did in he undergraduate. Imagine if undergraduate programs were centered around research ? Instead of guilt tripping students to not use the resources given, instead encourage students to use the resources given? That would make the biggest difference in the lives of the students . I don’t think of cheating as “cheating ” I think of cheating as a way to utilize the resources given to maximize the greatest out put . I don’t just google the answers, I study different responses and Pull in the resources and sources my teachers gave me to to find the best solution. I learn better, using these resources ! I learn better this way . I think we also have to realize college is self taught! Teachers and Professors don’t hold your hand, they lecture, you pay $200 for a textbook and are practically on your own all the while striving to accomplish the perfect grade in hopes of getting accepted into a Master’s program where you can get more specific breathing room. I think the system has to change more than anything, change to fit the students needs not some idea of what educators from a dying generation hope to see.

  • I’ve heard that Chegg has been snitching on students so I haven’t been using their services recently. Not only that but they have paywalls everywhere and so many ads that end up crashing my computer. I try my best not to cheat, but the temptation is really there. I wouldn’t be lying if I said I’ve googled a few questions while taking a test.

  • Here is something that might frustrate students : 1.) Make the final exam only 5% of your grade similar to the weight if a homework assignment. 2.) Make term papers 50% of grade 3.) Suggest a final project 4.) For basic 101 classes that are not able to use any of the above methods like Economics, physics, and math, I suggest that students should have to report to a testing center on campus in a room that applies social distancing and the final would be extended onto the end of next quarters finals, so your winter final would be difficult by end of spring term. That way students won’t crowd into 1 Coronavirus gas chamber on finals week. Instead, there wouldn’t be finals week. The final would just be due on a due date in a proctered facility.

  • I agree with most of these comments. Most of these professors are lazy on making their own assignments or exams. Some however do make their own. I had a professor in AP 1 that actually did make his own assignments and exams, which meant the answers weren’t online. I had to actually learn and study hard for the class. I was very proud of myself after passing the class without cheating. However, this is not 100% the professors fault.

  • I do think this is a issue with Education but whats even more outrageous that we college students are paying the same amount. I am transferred student and I transfer right before pandemic in which case I feel like I didn’t learn much and still paid the same amount. Not trying to defend the cheaters but I feel like we should get some sort of refund.

  • Nursing classes are near impossible to cheat. Those questions are made to fool you. Even if you find it right on quizlet which would rarely show up unless it’s ati. It won’t be right on the schools exam they pick their own answer for their exams. More than half my class failed when we went online during covid. Only 6 passed on time. Our test were monitored online with lockdown browser etc. and we had to have an additional camera on the side of us so 2-3 cameras perusal us during exams and flagging if you do any odd movements. Out of 21 only 6 passed.

  • I have used Chegg and Quizlet fairly often, but it’s more like having a tutor for me. I never just copy and paste the answer; I always follow the reasoning process. It’s not to save time; it’s to have more assurance in the work I am submitting. Is it still cheating? Maybe, yeah, but I’m actually learning better this way rather than not processing the long chapters with pretentious language.

  • Most people i know too are cheating through college, i dont. And the reason is because if youre cheating through college youre not really benefiting yourself. Think about it, youre putting yourself through years of college and for what? To graduate with no knowledge? Thats exactly why i dont cheat. When i graduate im going to actually graduate with KNOWLEDGE, and not the kid cheating. You have way more power when you actually learn the information because no one can take it away! Just wait till these cheaters are trying to get a job when they are up against someone who hasnt cheated and has way more knowledge. Karma will find them.
