Child abuse victims often experience it from parents through violence, neglect, or abandonment. In 2021, over 450,000 people abused or neglected a child, with 77% of cases being substantiated by a parent. Caregiver abandonment affects individuals long into adulthood, manifesting as dysfunctional traits in and outside of relationships. Abandoned children are those whose biological parents no longer fulfill their responsibility to care for and provide, ignoring their basic developmental needs. Disownment is a form of abandonment that entails ending contact with and support for one’s dependent.
An abandoned child has eight common shared characteristics: decreased self-esteem or sense of self when they do not have the support and encouragement of their biological parents. The rate and reasons for abandonment differ by country, region, and economic background. Depending on country, age, and era, abandoned children may be cared for.
Child abandonment is the practice of relinquishing interests and claims over one’s offspring in an illegal way, with the intent of never resuming or returning. A study interviewed 75 parents who had recently openly abandoned their children at a local institution, and three babies found abandoned at birth in East London have been shown by DNA to have the same parents.
China has experienced an upsurge in child abandonment since the late 1970s in parallel with its one-child policy (OCP) and market reforms. There is no official record of the amount of children abandoned worldwide, but about 7,000 children are abandoned annually in the U.S.

Is a parent leaving childhood trauma?
Caregiver abandonment can have lasting effects on individuals, often leading to dysfunctional traits in relationships and beyond. It is often overlooked in older teens, as seen in Cassie’s case when her father left her at age 18. Cassie was no longer welcome in his new family, and he continued sending Christmas and birthday cards but stopped contact altogether.

When a child feels abandoned by a parent?
Adolescence is a critical developmental stage for individuals, characterized by major biological, social, and cognitive changes. It is a time of exploration, abandoning childhood status, and beginning adult life. Adolescence can potentially lead to perilous circumstances, resulting in self-estrangement, but also present a favorable opportunity for individuals to comprehend their past traumas and attribute novel significance to them, thereby promoting emotional healing and resilience.
Unpleasant experiences in adolescence can significantly alter a child’s perception of their relationships with others, leading to a loss of trust in people. This can have a profound impact on their emotional and social development, potentially hindering their ability to form healthy connections with others in the future. The emotional bond between a mother or primary caregiver and the child lays the foundation for future relationships in adulthood.
A child with insecure attachment exhibits feelings of non-acceptance and experiences difficulties in establishing interpersonal relationships, increasing the likelihood of developing more intense self-conscious emotions.
Shame and guilt in adolescents are often overlooked in scientific literature, as they are characterized by an amplified emotional reactivity to the social environment. During adolescence, sensitivity to self-conscious emotional stimuli is greater than among children and adults. Shame and guilt, manifested as humiliation and worthlessness, can trigger feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, leading to an increased risk of suicide, especially during adolescence.
What is a child abandoned by parents called?
A foundling is a child who has been abandoned by their parents, often referred to as a “waif” or orphan. The word “foundling” shares a root with “found child”, meaning a young child who has not yet begun to walk or talk.
What country has the most abandoned children?
Orphan rates have been increasing globally due to the coronavirus pandemic, which disproportionately affects adults. Countries with the highest orphan rates include Russia, Iran, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Peru. However, there is no evidence to suggest that orphan rates in the United States are high. The pandemic has led to many parents dying, leaving their children orphaned.
The United States does not necessarily have higher orphan rates than other parts of the world. However, there is concern that the rising orphan rates in the United States could be due to recent changes in abortion laws and the increased number of children being put up for adoption. Adoption in the United States is not an easy process, with numerous children seeking new parents. Adoption is expensive, involving extensive paperwork, hiring a lawyer, and conducting background checks. Child Protection Services must ensure good matches between prospective parents and children, making it essential to have a professional to assist during the adoption process.

The grief process of abandonment is a cyclic process involving five universal stages: Shattering, Withdrawal, Internalizing, Rage, and Lifting. These stages affect different aspects of human functioning and lead to different emotional responses. The underlying wound of abandonment complicates grief when someone dies, as it leaves us feeling left behind and forsaken. The conflict left unresolved and unsaid words left unsaid can leave us alone to pick up the pieces of a beloved relationship.

Many jurisdictions have exceptions to abandonment laws, such as safe haven laws, which apply to babies left in designated places like hospitals. In the UK, abandoning a child under two years is a criminal offense, with 49 babies abandoned in 2004. Malaysia has a high rate of abandonment, with 517 babies dumped between 2005 and 2011, with 287 found dead. In 2012, there were 31 cases, including one child being thrown from a window of a high-rise apartment.

What percentage of parents lose a child?
The death of a child can significantly impact a parent’s life, with 99% of Americans experiencing it by age 60, 15% by age 70, and 18% by age 80. This loss can have long-term effects on parents’ adjustment in midlife, as well as the hospitalization for mental illness among parents after the death of a child. Improving palliative and end-of-life care for children and their families is crucial for addressing this issue.
How many children are abandoned by their parents?
Total abandonment is a severe form of neglect, involving leaving infants and children alone, unsupervised, and lacking adequate food, clothing, housing, and emotional care. Over 7, 000 children are abandoned annually. Since 1998, states have developed Safe Haven laws, which designate safe places for parents to leave their infants without criminal charges. All fifty states in the U. S. and Washington D. C. have maintained some variation of Safe Haven laws since 2008.
Hospitals with emergency departments are generally considered safe havens, while fire stations and police departments are common additional areas. Most states do not require parents or their designees to reveal their names or addresses, but some allow information requests. The maximum age an infant can be left in a safe haven varies.

The mean age for individuals to transition from their parents’ residence is between 24 and 27 years of age. How many parents leave their children?
Child abandonment is a significant issue in modern times, with millions of poor women seeking access to family planning and wanting to bear only the number of children they can take care of. The United States Nations estimates that 60 million children and infants have been abandoned by their families and live on their own or in orphanages worldwide. In the United States, over 7, 000 children are abandoned each year.
Poverty and homelessness are often causes of child abandonment, and people living in countries with poor social welfare systems like China, Myanmar, and Mexico are more likely to abandon their children due to a lack of resources.
Child abandonment can have a significant impact on a child’s growth and development, leading to low self-esteem, difficulty in emotionally attaching and trusting other caregivers, guilt, clinginess, insomnia, eating disorders, and depression. To prevent child abandonment, volunteers, get involved with parents in your community, help vulnerable children and their families start playgroups, discipline your child when upset, use privileges to encourage good behavior, and be a nurturing parent. Supporting children and parents through after-school activities, parent education classes, mentoring programs, and respite care can help prevent child abuse.
📹 Chinese Children Are Being Abandoned By Their Parents
Generation Left Behind: In parts of central China, not far from the birthplace of modern China’s founding father Mao Zedong …
I see that many of these people have never heard of baby drop places and laws which states so long as you leave a child at a place such as a fire department or a hospital, you will not be criminally charged, you will most likely be hunted down if you leave a newborn in a dumpster and criminally charged.
i was dropped off at a safe haven in my area after being born about 3 hours prior. they determined that i was about 6 weeks premature and i was a little over 3 pounds. my mother or father (im not sure who left me there, since i never got to view the security camera footage) did not ring the doorbell and i was left outside for 5 hours. i was found at night with only a towel around me. 15 years later, i am healthy and glad that whoever dropped me off there chose a place that would guarantee my safety. i wish safe haven areas were known everywhere so that these types of situations wouldn’t happen
It’s SO EASY to just walk the baby into a freaking fire station or police station and leave them in good hands. SO easy. And then you won’t be a murderer/child abuser, too. The way she carelessly threw the bag into the dumpster shows just how little she cares for human life. How sad. So glad the father has the baby. So glad the baby survived inside that plastic bag- incredible.
I feel so bad for the woman who was assaulted. Imagine how traumatic it is to go through and then to find out ur pregnant as well with an unwanted baby. I know someone who was assaulted and got pregnant. She immediately got an abortion, refusing to have the baby. She said if she carried the baby it would of been a constant reminder of what happened to her.
Being 16 at the time of the both of my first planned child, makes me inconceivable of this leaving them behind in a place where they couldn’t be found within a minute even if it convicted me. This is so impossible I just can’t! Sending all the strength and love to all you that saved these amazing innocent beautiful souls!
Hey I’m not gonna judge people who left their babies in the hands of authorities. I don’t know their lives. But the first one is a murder attempt. Baby was in a sealed plastic bag. She literally tossed it like a trash from far away…what if baby land on something sharp in the dumpster? For how long could it breath before bag was out of air? That monster needs to be locked away for good. Okay don’t be a mom for this baby but at least not kill it. She could have done something like the second woman did.
My goodness I was a victim of Rape 31 yrs ago I got pregnant as a result I was a Virgin and a teen I was scared and kept what happened to myself my mom found out I was pregnant the day b4 I had my child and was there with me in the delivery room she asked me after why I didn’t tell her I told her I was ashamed and scared she was there for me my daughter is 32 now successful and beautiful Don’t be afraid to ask for help and definitely do not!!!! Throw your baby away i know i could Never!!!! Do that NO!!! WAY!!!! The baby is a part of you i just dont understand that😪 there is help available Blessings ✌️💚💙❤️
The mom that left the baby in a restaurant bathroom is better by far then throwing your baby in the trash. There’s so many ways to go about it. Leave it somewhere where someone willl find the baby cause if those good Samaritan’s didn’t find that baby in the trash, baby would have died easily when more trash was thrown in or worse, when the dumpster was due to be emptied. That’s heartbreaking and has to leave trauma on a persons life, knowing someone put you in a dumpster.
Why didn’t anyone think to leave a baby at a hospital emergency, or police station, find a social worker I assume desperate to be free from punishment, God said no to loss of new life, it was a blessing that these babies lived through their experiences, I hope people find a good friend or relative, even neighbor who they trust instead of they feel they have no other options, just pay attention to your surroundings, trust your instincts, do the right thing. That’s also why everyone doesn’t need to be a parent. Prayers & congratulations to the helpful people who found the babies.🙏❤️🙏❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
Looking like forcing these woman to have kids, won’t make them keep it.. or force them to become “better people/parents”. Those poor abandoned, and abused babies. Also our foster system is a joke so let’s hope a good family is willing to step up, instead of letting these kids get traumatized, and age out of foster care only to end up alone on the streets again. We need a better foster care system that doesn’t just profit off having these innocent kids.
It’s infuriating that people would leave a baby anywhere a bad person could get them but to toss a baby in the trash…. In a bag?! It’s a known fact that you can leave your baby with emergency services or at a hospital with no questions asked and no consequences. I understand not wanting to be a parent or not able to but your baby is a human!
Its disturbing that the baby found in the shed already had bruises and a broken leg. How evil do you have to be to strike an infant? I think God they gave that baby up. Some people just have evil and darkness inside of them. If she stayed she would have been abused all through her childhood and I wouldn’t want any child to have to endure abuse. I mean she was barely a few months old and she already had bruises? Jesus I don’t even know what to say. Thank god God stepped in in this case. Other children have not been so lucky.
I hope humanity will advance greatly in the future.. technology so advanced we don’t need to work And poor people don’t exist.. everyone gets a chance of a life of paradise … maybe they can extend the time in the womb.. and use an artificial womb and we can grow the baby for as long as we want.. imagine if we all started life as fully grown
It must be scary to give birth when you never knew you were pregnant, but its much easier to give your baby to a fire department or hospital or even a public bathroom than to throw the baby in a dumpster like a piece of trash. Cause if that baby survives and grows up and finds you. They’re gonna ask why you threw them into a dumpster, and that’s probably not gonna be easy to answer.
If you don’t want your newborn baby look up your states safe haven baby laws, every state has the law, however it’s a little different in each state. It will tell you where you can give up your baby, and sometimes even another adult can do it for you. You usually can drop off your baby at fire departments, places of worship, hospitals etc. however you can’t just leave the baby on a doorstep you have to physically hand the baby over, and in most states you can do it anonymously. For what ever reason you cannot have a baby is really your own business, but just like you wish to go live your life, your baby also deserves to live its life.
Plain evil. If you cannot take care of your kid then drop it off somewhere SAFE. Literally anywhere is better than a DUMPSTER in a garbage bag. Imagine what a horrible death it is to suffocate or be crushed to death my the garbage truck!!! I’ve seen babies left in bathrooms. Literally anything is better than a dumpster. I don’t think women should be arrested for abandoning their baby so where safe. But throwing a poor baby in a dumpster?? Taht deserves jail
It is absolutely sickening to me to see these mothers just throw their babies away in the trash. And even abandoning them in a bathroom or anywhere else where they’re gonna be found isn’t quite justified. If you can’t take care of the baby, take it to a hospital or anywhere else where you know it’s in good hands.
Wtf is wrong with these people, throwing a baby in a dumpster is just something that should be punished with torture. Imagine a dump truck coming and those babies get crushed. 😢 I hope they live in hell the rest of their life’s. The only one I kinda felt bad for was the lady in the BK. She could of went another route and handed the baby to a local church or something.
My assumption when moms leave their newborn babies abandoned in places people can’t find them is just shock because I know that during/after giving birth some moms can go into a panic mode and what they do doesn’t make any sense at all and the shock can last days. Now idk if that’s what actually happened because I’m not them but it’s an actual medical thing and I’m giving the benefit of the doubt because otherwise it’s just too stupid what those mom do. Also this happens especially if you don’t know what you’re pregnant but it still can happen when you know you’re pregnant because it’s all just too much for your mind to handle. Btw for the lady who was raped that was an example of shock, she didn’t know she was pregnant and that was her reaction. Another example is a woman who didn’t know she was pregnant (consensual sex) who kept the baby went into shock so she went into the shower with the baby with cold water till the father of the baby came home to find them.
