Has Anyone Committed Suicide As A Result Of Homework?

Excessive homework is a significant issue in education, with limited benefits and potentially harming children’s mental health. Suicide rates have increased significantly among young Americans aged 10 to 24, making it the second leading cause of death after accidents. Indiana University’s High School Survey of Student Engagement shows that 82.7 US District High School students spend no more than 5 hours a week on homework, while 42.5 spend an hour or less each week on homework.

A Stanford researcher found that too much homework can negatively affect kids’ lives away from school, where family, friends, and activities matter. A study by the National Institute of Mental Health found that nearly 80 percent of 5- to 11-year-olds who died by suicide between 2013 and 2017 had mentioned killing.

America’s culture of hyperachievement among the affluent has been under scrutiny for at least the last decade, but recent suicide clusters, including the deaths of two teens in eastern China, highlight the importance of addressing homework demands. A teenage boy was found hanged in his room after it was thought he could not cope with the amount of homework he had been set during the coronavirus lockdown.

Suicide and mental health crisis rates increase sharply when school is in and ease when school is out. This pattern is also found in other areas, such as Harvard-Westlake and Brown University. A schoolgirl has killed herself after being chastised for unfinished homework, and an eighth standard student hanged himself on Wednesday after allegedly failing to complete his summer vacation homework.

  • I never did anything, but I can remember the shame that came along with homework. If I forgot it, if I couldn’t finish it, or when a teacher said, “Everyone do what you can in 30 min.” The whole class did basically the whole sheet….I only got through 2 problems. It’s not right the way we do this, and we need to actually stop and think. KIDS ARE KILLING THEMSELVES. That should be a GIANT red flag in the first place.

  • This is why schools need to abolish homework. They think homework will benefit them in the longrun. Teachers give out tons of homework and expect their students to get it done by the next day, which is completely outrageous. A whole sheet, or maybe even two sheets. They expect all of their students to get it done by the next day. Only 24 hours. Well, when no one has the damn thing done, they act all surprised and give you a long lecture about ‘how long they spent making these worksheets for you’. Well, maybe not make the assignment(s) so damn long, and then maybe, just maybe more people will have it done. This, without a doubt, causes suicidal thoughts within students because teachers are too stupid enough to not realize how badly this can affect their life in later years. There are, without a doubt, students who have gone as far as committing suicide because the school and/or teachers are not willing to slow down on the amount of homework they give out. I read one story where a student had set themselves ablaze and then died in a hospital. Why? Because of the unhealthy amount of homework they were getting. This is not just a teacher problem. I actively put the blame on both the schools for adopting it and the teachers for giving out too much of it. It was invented by an Italian teacher in 1902 as a way to punish his students who were misbehaving. And then every damn school in the entire world thought it was a good idea to torture kids for 13 years of their life. They shouldn’t be surprised if a student commits suicide because of the unhealthy amounts of homework they get probably every single school day.

  • When you’re in middle school or high school which I’m in high school you get more homework + Work for every class like 5-10 for every classes, you even get homework for Pe or art we have like 15-16 Classes along with learning foreign Language is hard guys, but we can do it, if we do our work and stuff at least we can be something in the future. People age under -13 might think their life is hard but trust me Middle school and high school is harder so work hard!

  • Put the bullies and their parents in jail. Permissive parenting in the US is a leading perpetuation of the increasing lack of respect for authority lies in the spoiling of children. Out of fear of infringing on a child’s autonomy and development, parents are giving their children more freedom to make decisions long before they are capable of thinking logically and not impulsively

  • Things won’t change until something is done with the school facility because at the end of the day it was the school facility who didn’t report this to anyone because they thought “Oh this will stop on it’s own” no it won’t I know because I went through the same thing now I’m in a better place. I send my best to families who are fighting for change.

  • If these schools can’t control the bullying and the ones that are doing the bullying needs to have their rear handed to them, a law should be made if you are bullying someone to the point of those being bullied be held accountable and put behind bars for allowing and not controlling that caused theses teens out there that killed themselves, pretty much making those involved accountable and accessory or contributing to the death of students pushed to killing themselves.

  • The father makes a number of excellent points. In particular, swift discipline by the principal of the school would have both let Adriana know that adults had her back ( instead of abandoning her,), would likely have deterred the posting of these articles by the assailants, and even if at that point the articles were still posted, the victim would have gent there was official recourse. Instead she felt abandoned by the adults and the system in the school that were supposed to protect her by duty.

  • Bullying is a serious case. They held your life if you have bullies. When you have a girlfriend or boyfriend theyll either bully her or him or rather take em away from you. They hold what you eat and take anything ..money, food, they’ll even destroy your homework to make sure you don’t present anything. Sometimes they’ll wait for you after school so they can take you somewhere else to sadistically abuse you.

  • I’m a former public school teacher and principal. The middle school where I was principal was a fairly tough place. When I arrived there was at least one fight every day, some days as many as 7 or 8. One of the reasons that students weren’t afraid to fight in school was because the consequences were a slap on the wrist. 3-5 days at home suspension was what the code of conduct instructed. I immediately joined up with two other principals and we totally ripped up the code of conduct and developed a new one. A point system that was much like points on a drivers license for traffic infractions. Each violation of the code of conduct has a specific number of points associated with it. As students accumulated points the at home suspension got longer and longer. The big one was that a fight was an automatic 10 points and a 30 day at home suspension. That was was 30 school days, not 30 calendar days. So a fighting suspension on average last about 6 weeks. If it was near the holiday season, Thanksgiving through Christmas, the suspension could last as long as 8 weeks. At first the students didn’t think we were serious. They found out after the first fight which took only 2 days that we wouldn’t back down from the 30 day suspension for fighting. After that I went from averaging at least one fight per day to one fight every 4-6 weeks which was a huge change. We also implemented a self defense rule where if a student was trying to start a fight they both had the option of walking away. But if one student trapped the other in a physical location where they were prevented from walking away they were allowed to defend themselves without consequences.

  • That article is hard to watch it really is may she rest in peace if you are going through what she is going through do not pick to die by your own hand.things will get better i was bullied in school my brother also took his life so i know what i am talking about here. Taking your life hurts your loved ones i hope them bullies are happy you ruined your life and hers!

  • Bullying of any kind, once confirmed, should be publicized to STOP 🛑 the mess! In Addition, PARENTS should TEACH children how to identify ‘bullying’ and how to walk away from it and get police involved! Bullying is a “COWARDLY” act and should be dealt with like any other crime! Stop killing yourself over these cowards!

  • I feel for this young girl. Parents teach your children God loves them just the way we are. Everyone on the face of this Earth has a flaw of some sort!!! When people try to humiliate you, and demean your person, your life, your existence, they are operating in the whelm of Satan, who comes to kill, steal, and destroy, frustrate, intimidate, belittle etc. Stay away from these people. Resist the devil and he will flee from u!!!

  • Show the pictures of the bullies and the parents!! Shame them, not the girl and her family. Superintendent of school has lost it. Covid, blaming the victim’s family, really? Who are the criminals? They are already grown children, by now they have already formed their characters and mindsets. They should know better . Burying your own young child, forever gone, just because of these evil bullies!! Karma will get them. Prayers for justice!

  • 0:21 – superintendent resigns 0:47 – father of girl who killd herself said school didn’t call police dy., his daughter was attacked. Thinks reposting of article made girl kill self. (1:00) – dad, if they called police n did investigation those girls wouldn’t hav posted articles. 1:06 – Olivia said she was attacked as a freshman yr. b4. (1:24) – mom said school didn’t call police n punish attackers n that’s y she pulld Olivia from school n filed lawsuit. 1:49 – Berkley Townships mayor said 0 tolerance policies will b at the HS n programs will b launched. Adrian’s dad wants whole school admin replaced.

  • We took God out of the schools in 1964. We are reaping the consequences. Schools are not our friends anymore. What is happening?? Horrible!! They do not protect our CHILDREN!! Teachers and school administrators, BE ASHAMED!! A young life, young lives, are lost forever because of inaction and stupidity. Imagine being that dad…💔💔💔🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

  • People take what’s said on Facebook way too hard, be like me and don’t give a shit what people say, No one is perfect so if you think someone is superior to you, that’s your biggest mistake. And yes I got punched out in grade school more then a few times back in the 70s. I think I had a better life then most of my bully’s, and probably out lived most of them, so who won.

  • Dear God ….stop raising these soft, predisposed victims. If your kid tries to bully my kid you will be taking that troglodyte to the dentist and once you get home I will be waiting on your porch to treat you in kind…..we do not play that here. I taught my kids to neutralize the threat to the floor and not to stop until they have no fight left in them…..

  • Im of the belief that its just better to turn the force multiplier on others, rather than yourself. Because what is it now? A Innocent Young Girl is dead, and her bullies won’t regret it, they’ll laugh about it. “Haha, We Got that Weird girl to Reset Herself.” And the consequences aren’t going to teach them to accept THEIR mistakes, they’ll just hate the system that sided with the “Weird Girl.” Sad as it is to say, thats how kids are, thats how people are. Some people never grow out of it, they’ll talk about it the rest of their lives. “haha, Remember when that weird girl offed herself, hilarious.” Where if she just turned the gun on them, she’d have erased some good for nothing people from the world. But, then none of you would think she was a victim of bullying, would you? Like that kid at Parkland, he turned on the people that bullied him, they openly admitted to Ostracizing him because he was “Weird”. But since the Anti-Gun narrative is in full swing, you didnt see him as a victim of Bullying, did you?

  • I dont feel bad for this suicide girl killing herself. She never thought of her family feelings to be sad for her when she do something like that, EVERYONE is born stupid and smart.. The girl need is to tell the bullies, If the scenarios is the way around, how would u feel if you get bullied by other people? the same way you did to me?” If they dont stop, then talk to an adult. Im not siding with the bullies or this suicide girl. I wish to leave this freaky world full of stupidity and smart people. I stay alive for my family and good music. I know I’m bad for talking like this, but this is the truth. She never thought of her family that always beside her.

  • During my time growing up, you almost never heard of a girl who didn’t want to live. Back in my time, we all hero worshipped girls. When I was in school, if agirl was silly and dressed sexv or whatever, we’d clap for her. Many of them were even virgins who just wanted to show off their looks. Nowdays, it’s like they wage war against attractive females. Nobody jokes anymore. People are serious and very dangerous. I feel sorry for a lot girls who are growing up in these bad times. I love all ladies and I want you to live and to be safe.

  • I am SICK of spotlights go to teens who looks like that and have friends, boyfriends. But I never see people who look like me, that are bullied, have no friends, no mental support. But no, the news rather show society “pretty” underweight chicks because they know people would care more about these fakes than real victims.
