What age is considered vintage clothing?

“Vintage” refers to old styles of clothing made between 20 and 100 years ago, reflecting the styles and trends of the era they represent. These items are valued by vintage enthusiasts for their sense of history and sentimental nostalgia for past fashions and aspects not common with modern items like craftsmanship. They are different from antiques, which are items 100 years old or more. Retro clothing imitates the style of a previous era, while reproduction clothing is a newly made copy of an older garment.

Modern or contemporary fashion is produced more recently. Deadstock refers to merchandise that was withdrawn from sale and warehoused without being sold to a customer, either no longer in fashion or outdated. Returning to sale of fashion merchandise would make it vintage clothing, but repurposing deadstock in new products can improve sustainability in the fashion industry.

Antiques can be appraised by hiring an antiques appraiser or using online services like JustAnswer Appraisals. Asking an antique dealer or appraiser at an auction house can also provide valuable information. However, it is crucial to research the appraiser’s experience, reviews, and certification before hiring them. Some appraisers specialize in specific types of antiques, so it is essential to find one with expertise in your item.

Consignment is a selling process where the item is not purchased directly by the seller but is stored in their store. The consignment shop receives a significant cut, sometimes as high as 50%. It is advisable to avoid consignment altogether as the chances of losing or damaging the antique are higher. How do I know if my vintage clothing is valuable?

Valuation of high-end items is influenced by several factors, including brand, condition, and rarity. A high-end designer brand, such as Dior, is more valuable than a Zara dress due to its status and quality. High-end brands are generally in better condition, as previous owners usually take good care of them.

Condition is another critical factor, with better quality resulting in higher value. The only exception is if the item has been owned and worn by famous people, where it should be worn but not in perfect condition. If there is no special provenance, the condition should be as good as possible.

Work done on the item, such as a tailor fixing a broken part, can impact the value. The most desirable outcome is to have the items untouched in their original appearance. However, well-adjusted items may have a higher value than those torn down. Overall, a well-crafted item with a high value can be a valuable investment.

  • Thanks for a great article. I was wondering if anyone can find the article made from the collaboration between Levi’s and Pendleton. It is supposed to be called: “Bares, Broncs and Bulls in the Navajo Nation”. According to the internet it was made in 2010, so it should be available somewhere. Personally, I haven’t found it yet.

  • Levi’s has such great quality materials but if they don’t get rid of labeling the clothing so obvious, they are losing a lot of customers. You cannot wear clothing with a big writing on you in the office. I don’t think the target are teenagers only, people want to wear clothing that is more discrete without showing up to others what brand you are wearing. I think it is a matter of marketing but many people avoid Levi’s just because of that.
