What is the problem with denim?
The chemical process of dyeing jeans has been a significant environmental issue for the past century, with the denim industry using synthetic indigo and sodium hydrosulfite as reducing agents. These chemicals can be toxic and carcinogenic, polluting the environment near factories. Dyeing jeans requires nearly 30 gallons of water, and chemical additives used with the water are highly alkaline and corrosive. Chemical-contaminated water often ends up in waterways near factories, decimating local ecosystems and even dyeing rivers blue.
Researchers have developed new methods to replace these dyes, focusing on 18 impact categories, including fossil fuel use, human exposure to carcinogens, and water pollution. The new methods, which use an engineered enzyme to dye with indican, reduce environmental impacts by 92% and 73%, respectively.

What does denim & Diamonds mean?
Diamonds and denim are a unique combination of high society and working-class fashion, showcasing glamour and grit. Diamonds symbolize a woman’s finesse and nobler aspirations, while denim represents the everyday woman’s readiness to get “down and dirty”. The dark colors of denim clothing are accentuated by the light caught in diamond jewelry facets. The stark bright flashes of diamonds enhance the lightly feminine colors on the rough fabric. Diamonds can be mixed and matched with various fabrics, such as silk, lace, and satin.
The clarity inherent in diamonds ensures they will look good with any apparel. The diamonds and denim combination brings out the dual nature of the woman: strength and delicacy, roughness and gentleness. This combination works for intense, down-to-earth women who won’t compromise their style but are open to displaying their more sensitive sides.
