Yes, the examples of children cycling in the article show them riding in a bike lane around the outside of a roundabout. That puts them out of view of motorists (directly behind the motor vehicles), where motorists may or may not turn right. The children are riding at speed, not checking for motor traffic to their left. Clearly, safety in this situation results only from motorists’ caution, not from the infrastructure or the children’s actions.
At least they don’t ride against the flow of cycle traffic hehe, in my country is unthinkable for Children to cycle to school because of the lack of real safety (infrastructure), perceived safety (culture) still I think more people would feel at peace learning on dutch infra than putting their Kids in “sharrows” probably it’s because it does provide cyclist with real safety.
There’s something your country can do. Make it illegal to text while biking. Accident happens and the biker was texting, the car insurance company don’t have to pay for bike damages. If the occupant of the bike was under age, the insurance company cannot go after the kid or the family for damages. I have confidence that your country will not mess it up like mine.
